G SCENE

Mark Kydd deftly interwove fiction with reality at I Look: I Divine… using anecdotal monologue to captivate the audience

Told with humour, a penchant for origami, and charming self-deprication, “We planned two versions of this show; this is the one with no budget!”

Interspersed with cliff hanger revelations, faded memories and dusty family secrets, I Look: I Divine is a story many of us can relate to, a story stranger than fiction!

BroadwayBaby

“Kydd's involving and enjoyable telling of this three-sided tale.”

“Kydd weaves in and out of these strands with ease… at his best when telling us about being the only boy at ballet lessons, his first stage experience with a sweaty-handed Charles Hawtry; finding his brother's porn stash and realising both of them are gay.”

“We get just enough of a glimpse of what everything looked like in his youth, but we're not drowned in it: Kydd's storytelling and our imagination are still the key engines.”

FRINGEGURU

“Mark Kydd’s one-man, semi-autobiographical show is a taut and lucid piece of storytelling that concerns the trials and traumas of two pairs of gay brothers: one from either side of the Atlantic, one from either side of fiction.”

“The Marlborough Theatre is in the habit of offering a strong programme each Fringe, and Dermot McLaughlin’s production - which is Kydd’s writing debut - does not feel out of place.”  “the design and direction are kept enjoyably straightforward”

“I Look: I Divine is evidence of an artist with a real chunk of talent. The writing is crisp, the performance equally so.”

Brighton Finge Reviews:

" It's difficult to tell the story of one's family..."

Part confessional monologue, part lecture and part storytelling, there were two brothers is a funny, very personal exploration of fraternal relationships, seen through the prism of an obscure novel with a bad cover illustration.

Inspired by gay brothers, both real and fictional, this debut play from performer Mark Kydd takes the audience on an unexpected journey through his experiences with his brother Paul.

About storytelling, secrets, and sibling rivalry, it’s a piece for anyone who has known the joys, frustrations and complexities of family life.
